3 stages of post-construction cleaning and how to do it yourself

Post-Construction Cleaning

Summertime is a busy time for many Floridians with construction projects. And for us, it’s post-construction cleaning that we get a lot of requests for.

Today we would like to share some tips on what to expect from post-construction cleaning, how to prepare for it, and how to do it yourself if you have the desire and energy for it.

When your construction project ends, it often feels like it takes more time than expected, but before you can enjoy the results, you must clean the space and get ready to move back in. And how easy it is to accomplish depends on how the work was conducted during construction. It pays to spend more time securing your surfaces during each case of the construction. Even if you replace the floor, it’s much easier to clean if it is protected from the beginning. It not only saves surfaces from damage during the process but also helps save on deep post-construction cleaning afterward.

We have seen many issues that can happen, like spilled paint on the marble floor, which resulted in the need to replace it. And most common are scratches and dents. And even if there is no damage, it’s easier to clean up dust and sawdust by removing the protected cover. So don’t shy away from extra work, and encourage your construction company to prepare for post-construction clean-up in advance.

So now, heavy-duty cleaning should ideally be divided into three stages when all the work is done.

Steps to successful post-construction cleaning

1. It’s a first construction clean-up, often performed while minor touch-ups are still needed. It can be hectic and often feels like not much is done, but in reality, it’s labor intensive, and that’s when a majority of dust is removed by sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, and wiping down all surfaces. There still will be a lot of dust in the air, and even more released by touching it, so keeping doors and windows open and using ventilators can help remove it. And that’s why the second stage is often necessary because all this dust will settle. Our advice is to space those cleanings at least a day apart.

2. This stage is the final cleaning. All the surfaces are wiped or mopped again. It’s also an excellent time to wash windows and door frames. It may take as long as the first stage, but depending on the situation can take more or less time.

3. This is the touch-up cleaning stage, and while not necessary, it’s the one that gives that pristine feeling of cleanliness.

We love working with construction companies that understand the process and thus work cleanly from the start and help educate their clients on expectations from post-construction cleaning.

Recently we worked with Groomco construction company and loved their professionalism and how they think of the clean-up process in advance.

So here are the rips on how you can lighten up our load for cleaning or approach this task yourself.

Additional post-construction cleaning tips:

  1. Start by removing all large debris like construction materials, furniture, and appliances. You can use a broom, dustpan, or trash can.
  2. Open the windows and doors. It will help to ventilate the space and remove any lingering odors.
  3. Vacuum and dust surface like floors, furniture, walls, ceilings, and appliances. Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter to remove dust and allergens.
  4. Mop or steam clean the floors to remove any dirt, grime, or dust that was left behind by the construction crew.
  5. Clean the windows. It will help brighten your space and make it feel more inviting.
  6. Clean the bathrooms, including the toilet, sink, shower, and bathtub. Use a disinfectant cleaner to kill any bacteria or mold that may have been left behind.
  7. Clean the kitchen, which includes the stove, oven, refrigerator, and countertops. Use a degreaser to remove any grease or oil that was left behind.
  8. Take out the trash. This includes any construction debris, trash, or recycling.

You can always hire a professional cleaning service if you need more time or energy to do a thorough post-construction cleaning.
