Your rug takes a beating every day. Dirt, spills, pet accidents, and daily foot traffic make it look dull and worn out. But here’s the good news: you don’t need expensive professional cleaning every time.
At Clean Couture LLC, we have cleaned hundreds of rugs over the years. We’ve seen it all—from stubborn wine stains on Persian rugs to muddy paw prints on shag carpets. Here, we are sharing our proven 9-step method on how to clean a rug at home.
Let’s get your rug looking brand new again.
You don’t need fancy equipment to clean rugs at home. Here’s what works for us at Clean Couture LLC:
What do you need?

Firstly, move your rug outdoors if possible. This prevents dust and debris from spreading inside your home.
Hang it over a fence or railing. Give it a good shake to remove loose dirt.
Start with the back of your rug. Most people skip this step, but dirt settles through the fibers to the backing.
Flip it over and vacuum the front. Use slow, overlapping strokes. Go over high-traffic areas twice.
Pro tip from our team – Change vacuum direction halfway through. This lifts embedded dirt that one-directional vacuuming misses.
Mix a small amount of cleaning solution. Mix 2 tablespoons of dish soap with 2 cups of warm water. Add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar for extra cleaning power.
Apply it to a hidden corner of your rug. Wait 10 minutes. Blot with a white cloth. If color transfers, stop immediately—this rug needs professional cleaning.
Work on stains before general cleaning. Blot fresh spills with a clean cloth—never rub.
Use appropriate stain removers:
Mix your cleaner in a bucket. For most rugs, use mild dish soap and warm water. Apply the solution with a soft brush or sponge. Work in sections. Scrub gently in the direction of the fibers.
Don’t oversoak your rug. Too much water causes mold and mildew problems.
Use a soft-bristle brush for delicate rugs. Switch to a stiffer brush for durable synthetic fibers.
Scrub each section thoroughly. Pay extra attention to entryways and areas where people walk the most.
Rinse away all soap residue. Leftover soap attracts dirt and makes your rug dirty faster. Use a garden hose on low pressure. Or wipe sections with clean, damp cloths repeatedly.
Squeegee away standing water. Work from one end to the other.
Press towels into the rug to absorb more moisture. Replace wet towels with dry ones.
Hang your rug in direct sunlight. Sun kills bacteria and removes odors naturally. Flip it every few hours for even drying. Make sure both sides dry completely before bringing them back inside.
Warning – Never put your rug away damp. This creates perfect conditions for mold growth.
This natural combo works wonders. We use it at Clean Couture LLC for customers who want chemical-free cleaning.
The baking soda method includes the following steps;
Mix your vinegar solution:
Apply with a spray bottle or sponge. Work in small sections. Scrub gently with a soft brush. The vinegar cuts through grease and kills odor-causing bacteria. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Blot dry with towels.
It is perfect for pet odors, food spills, smoke smell, and general freshening.
Bonus tip – Baking soda alone works as a dry cleaner. Sprinkle it on, wait 2 hours, vacuum thoroughly. Great for quick refreshes between deep cleans.

Pressure washers clean outdoor rugs fast. But be careful—they can damage delicate rugs.

Common mistakes we see
Hand cleaning gives you complete control. It’s safer for expensive rugs and more effective for spot cleaning.
Fill two buckets—one with cleaning solution, one with plain rinse water. Use a cleaning solution of warm water, 1-2 drops mild dish soap per cup of water, and 1 tablespoon white vinegar (optional).
Dip your brush or cloth in the cleaning solution. Wring out excess water.
Scrub the rug in gentle, circular motions. Work on small areas at a time. Rinse your brush frequently in clean water. After cleaning each section, wipe it with a cloth dampened in plain rinse water. Press dry towels into the rug to absorb moisture.
Best for – Wool rugs, silk rugs, oriental rugs, Persian rugs, expensive heirlooms.
Limited space? Small bathroom? No outdoor area? You can still clean your rugs.
Apartment-friendly cleaning methods:
Your bathtub is perfect for cleaning small to medium rugs. We recommend this method to our apartment-dwelling customers.
Size limit – Only clean rugs under 5×7 feet in the bathtub
Some rugs are machine washable. But most aren’t. Here’s how to know the difference.
Machine-washable rugs
✓ Small bathroom mats (under 3×5 feet)
✓ Cotton rugs
✓ Synthetic fiber rugs
✓ Rugs labeled “machine washable”
✓ Thin, lightweight rugs without backing
NEVER machine wash
Wool rugs
Oriental or Persian rugs
Rugs with rubber backing (backing deteriorates)
Shag rugs (tangle badly)
Large or heavy rugs (damage the machine)
Rugs with fringe (fringe gets destroyed)
Pro warning from Clean Couture LLC – When in doubt, don’t risk the washing machine. Hand washing is always safer for questionable rugs.
